To understand the avocado advantage, you need to know the difference between avocado salsa and guacamole. They are not the same. Mexico serves thick guacamole like the US, but it is usually not gussied with additional vegetables. Avocado salsa is meant to be a taco sauce and is sometimes watered down with tomatillos.

Guacamole, the chunky version, is made using a fork or potato masher. Salsa de aguacate (avocado salsa) is the same but blended. Mexican cream, milk, or water is used for consistency.

So how did āhuacamolli evolve to the guac we know and love today — chock full of mixings? Early accounts claim the Aztecs were already adding tomatoes and chiles to their guacamole since these products are native to the Americas. However, once the Europeans established the Columbian Exchange (named after Mr. Columbus of La Niña, La Pinta, and Santa Maria fame) to trade between the Americas, Africa, and Europe, new types of produce and foods hit the New World market. Items like garlic, onions, cilantro, and limes. Sound familiar, guacamole fans?

Eating one fresh avocado daily for six months improved working memory and problem-solving skills in 40 healthy adults aged 50 and older, according to research from Tufts University published in the journal Nutrients. Researchers reported study participants developed 25% more lutein in their eyes. Lutein accumulates in the blood, vision, and brain and may act as an anti-inflammatory agent and antioxidant.

A separate study found that avocado seed husks, typically tossed out with the seed, contain chemical compounds with potential value in medical and industrial applications. As reported by Ingredients Network, researchers at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley identified 116 compounds in the husk oil and 16 in the husk wax, many of which don’t appear in the seeds.
